The health physics
instrument calibration laboratory at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory
in New Mexico was completed in 2001.
This new lab calibrates over 10,000 radiation survey instruments annually.
Hopewell Designs, Inc. designed and manufactured seven automated, computer controlled
irradiator systems for this laboratory.
These irradiator systems, the building's new features, and the calibration program,
has made this one of the top instrument calibration laboratories in the United States.

| Irradiators at this site:
|
Gamma Beam Irradiator
This irradiator can hold up to seven sources in a shielded carousel.
With the system's computerized control the operator selects a source,
and the carousel rotates into position.
The selected source is then blown from its shielded position in the carousel to the exposed position.
In the exposed position, the source shines a collimated beam of radiation along the positioning track.
The exposure rate for each source is calibrated for the full length of travel on the track.
A video-camera allows the operator to read the instrument during exposure.
|
Gamma Free-in-air Irradiator
This Irradiator is similar in operation to the Gamma Beam Irradiator,
but it does not collimate the radiation beam.
This irradiator's Linear Positioning System allows over 6 meters of travel.
|
Neutron Free-in-air Irradiator
This irradiator has two different neutron sources, each in its own exposure tube.
The system's computer controls movement of the sources between their underground storage
and their exposed positions.
An aluminum platform and elevated source-exposed position help reduce scatter from the floor.
|
Albatross Range Irradiator
This is a special purpose irradiator for calibrating the Albatross detector -
a neutron detector that is insensitive to gamma radiation.
This irradiator has a neutron source and a gamma source, both of which can be exposed at the same time.
|
Neutron Well Irradiator
For production work, this irradiator allows neutron detectors to be calibrated
quickly and efficiently.
To ensure accuracy, it has been cross-calibrated with the Neutron Free-in-air Irradiator.
